A. Four electronic health record (EHR) functions necessary to acute care clinical end users
include managing patient demographics, placing patient care orders (CPOE), managing
protocols and patient specific care plans and clinical decision support.
1. Managing patient demographics is an important function used by acute care
clinical end users in which relevant patient demographic data is collected and
recorded. CPOE is a function used to place and track various order types which
include medications, lab testing, radiology and referrals. Managing protocols and
patient care plans are an essential function used to reduce patient harm through
specific patient care plans built upon patient’s individual needs. Clinical decision
support assists in long term patient care and clinician decision making. Clinical
decision support systems share data which include treatment, diagnosis,
immunization and medication history as well as other pertinent medical
information.[ CITATION Und \l 1033 ]
2. One possible strategy that introduces new technology and enables integration with
old technology is the use of system integrators. System integrators are companies
that specialize in unifying different vendor products by either writing interface
programs or supplying an interface engine. Interface engines are a software tool
that manages multiple interface connections among contrasting systems, which
support various communication protocols by mapping data formats between
incompatible applications.
