My capstone research project will be applied research by evaluating curricular practices.

Research Topic


My Capstone research is to analyze the phonics curriculum called 95% Phonics Core

Program from the company 95%. This phonics program has a core curriculum and an

intervention program. The company prides itself on the science of reading and gives

teachers resources to provide successful phonics lessons. Kindergarten lessons from the

program consist of phonological awareness practice, skills practice with letters, word

practice, reading/writing sentences, and high-frequency words. My research will look at

lessons from the curriculum to analyze the curriculum’s alignment with the phonics

standards of Tennessee:


 K.FL.PWR.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills when

decoding isolated words and in connected text.

 K. FL.SC.6 Demonstrate command of standard English grammar and usage

conventions when speaking and conventions of standard English grammar and

usage, including capitalization and punctuation, when writing with adult support.


This type of research is appropriate for curriculum and instruction because evaluating

curricula alignment will help districts decide on the best program for their goals and

students. I want to align the curriculum to see if it best fits our students and our state's

standards. Districts can improve student achievement by aligning written, taught, and

tested curricula (Squires, 2012). The curriculum helps students reach their full potential in

their academic careers. Also, understanding the science of reading will aid in working with
