CORNELL NOTES 3.3

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Notes
 Name and write formulas of
compounds.
NAMING BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS

 FOR METAL AND NONMETAL
 How to name an ionic
compound formed by a metal Name: metal + nonmetal stem +
and nonmetal? ide

 EXAMPLE OF NAMING IONIC
 Can you give me an example of
COMPOUNDS FORMED BY
naming ionic compounds
METAL AND NONMETAL:
formed by metal and
nonmetal? KCL = Potassium + Chlorine + ide

For Chlorine, Remove ine and
change to ide

KCL = Potassium + Chlor + ide

Therefore, KCL (ionic
compound) is called Potassium
chloride.

REFLECTION
 To name ionic compounds formed by metal and nonmetal. Name = metal +
nonmetal stem + ide.

,  FOR TRANSITION METAL AND
NONMETAL

There are two ways to name ionic
compounds formed by transition
metals and nonmetals:

• New name

 How to name an ionic Name:
compound formed by a transitional metal (with roman
transitional metal and numeral) + nonmetal stem + ide
nonmetal through the new
method? Note: The roman numeral
corresponds to the number of
valence electrons the nonmetal
has.

 How to name an ionic • Old name
compound formed by a
Name:
transitional metal and
transitional metal stem + ous / ic
nonmetal through the old
+ nonmetal stem + ide
method?
Note: Use “Ous” if valence
electrons are 1-2+, while “Ic” if
valence electrons are 3-4+.

 EXAMPLE OF NAMING IONIC
 Can you give me an example of COMPOUNDS FORMED BY
naming ionic compounds TRANSITIONAL METAL AND
formed by transitional metal NONMETAL:
and nonmetal?
3 = Iron + Chlorine + ide

Answer in New name:
Iron (I) chloride

REFLECTION
 To name ionic compounds formed by transitional metal and nonmetal. Name
= transitional metal + nonmetal stem + ide.
 For New naming of transitional metal and nonmetal, The roman numeral
corresponds to the number of valence electrons the nonmetal has.
