A. Professional Growth Plans and Improving Instructional Practice: Raylene
Olinger states, “Deliberate practice is not merely repetition but the intentional
choice and practice of something we are not good at but want to improve on,
incorporating feedback and reflection about performance. Intentionally choosing
something we are not good at as a professional goal seems logical, but it is not
comfortable. Too often, we choose to practice things we are already good at”
(Olinger, 2017, para. 3). When teachers are intentional in their professional
growth plans and goals, educators are practicing: continuous learning, inclusivity,
social and emotional development, collaboration, and self-reflection while
increasing student engagement. Implementing a professional growth plan
promotes student achievement by enhancing instructional strategies and
improving academic and nonacademic success for all students. When
setting a professional growth plan, teachers should begin by completing a self-
assessment. It is imperative that teachers reflect on their strengths and
weaknesses in their current practices. Next, identify SMART (specific,
measurable, achievable, relative, timely) goals. Then, find resources to assist in
reaching your goal (new instructional strategies, classroom management tools,
etc.). Teachers will then need to create an action plan that outlines how and
when strategies and tools will be implemented. During this step, teachers should
note if any support is required. Next, teachers will begin to implement the plan
and monitor progress. During this step, teachers will adjust and make changes
as needed. Finally, teachers will reflect on the progress and revise/adjust after
