, Reduction/Realignment: performing a surgical procedure on an open
fracture or use of external fixation on a closed fracture
1. External fixator: composed of metal pins & wires that are inserted into the
bone & attached to external rods to stabilize the feature while it heals. Can
be used to apply traction or compress fracture fragments & immobilize
reduced fragments. It is mainly used for complex fractures with extensive
soft tissue damage
Immoblization: cast/splint for 4-6wks & external fixation/traction
1. Keep cast dry, elevate cast, report numbness or tingling in extremities, do
not place items in the cast

Surgery can be replacement or open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) -
Surgeons perform a reduction & place the screws/plates within
