THE ETHICAL DILEMMA OF NURSING AND RATIONAL SUICIDE 2 Does a nurse have the right to try and stop a person from committing rational suicide? Clinical nurses that take care of cancer patients that a re nearing the end of their lives are faced by a lot of ethical dilemmas. A main emerging dilemma is suicide. Across the world, about 1000 people die every year by suicide. In the U.S. alone, the annual suicide rate is 30000. Successful suicide attempts leave behind family, friends, relatives, coworkers and the health workers themselves feeling responsible, helpless and inadequate. The desire of a patient to commit suicide affect them, their family, friends and the healthcare professions. This case of Mr. Wilsons’ desire to commit suicide illustrates, an ethical dilemma pinpointing important concert topics. These topics include; the patients confidentiality, autonomy, the code of ethics of the nurse, beneficence, and the role of the nurse in preventing death of a patient (Grant & Lusk, 2015)
