TASK 3 - Passed
Evaluating Curriculum Alignment

, Evaluating Curriculum Alignment 2

Introduction

Curriculum Unit Information

I will use the eighth-grade core physical science curriculum for this evaluation.

Specifically, I will look at the concepts and instruction related to teaching the periodic table

which falls in unit I. The VA standard that corresponds to this topic is PS.4.a and PS.4.b

(together compromise Va standard PS.4). PS.4.a states “The student will investigate and

understand that the periodic table is a model used to organize elements based on their atomic

structure. Key uses include symbols, atomic numbers, atomic mass, chemical groups (families),

and periods are identified on the periodic table.” (2019b, p. 14). PS.4.b states “The student will

investigate and understand that the periodic table is a model used to organize elements based on

their atomic structure. Key uses include elements are classified as metals, metalloids, and

nonmetals.” (2019b, p. 14) Prior to learning standards PS.4, students are exposed to VA standard

6.5. (2019b, p. 14) Standard 6.5 states “in the introduction to the atom are subatomic particles,

elements, the fundamentals of bonding, and the chemical equations to model a chemical

reaction.” (2019b, p. 14) The level that comes after physical science is chemistry. In chemistry,

students build off of PS.4 to work towards mastery of CH.2. (2019b, p. 14) For standard CH.2,

“students use the periodic table to predict trends within groups and periods and to predict

bonding.” (2019, p. 14)

Learning Progression

The learning progression of the three standards mentioned above spans from sixth-grade

science to high school chemistry. Standard 6.5 is introduced in sixth-grade science. This standard

introduces students to the idea that atoms are subatomic particles, the basics of bonding, and the
