Student Technology Lesson GLM2- Task 2
A. Create an original secondary (middle school, junior high, or high school)
mathematics lesson plan that meets the following requirements:
Math Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Template
General Information
Lesson Title: Exploring the Pythagorean Theorem with Technology
Subject(s): Algebra
Grade/Level/Setting: 8th Grade
Prerequisite Skills/Prior Knowledge:
What do your students already know or what do they need to know about the selected topic to successfully
participate in the lesson?
- Identifying the hypotenuse and legs of a right triangle.
- Understanding of calculating squares of number.
- Understanding of square roots.
- Solving simple equations for a missing variable
Standards and Objectives
State/National Academic Standard(s):
8.G.B.7: Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side
lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two
and three dimensions.
Learning Objective(s):
Identify what students will accomplish by the end of the lesson; needs to align with the state or Common Core State
Standards and needs to be measurable (condition, behavior, and criterion).
- Students will be able to state and explain the Pythagorean Theorem in their own words
with 90% accuracy.
- Students will be able to use GeoGebra to construct right triangles and visually confirm
the Pythagorean Theorem.
- Students will demonstrate understanding of the theorem by solving problems involving
right triangles with at least 80% accuracy on independent practice questions.
- Students will explain the theorem and its applications using mathematical language and
reasoning.
