Module: Narcotic Drug and Explosives
Narco'c is derived from the Greek word Narcosis which means the state of
lethargy but medically it is the sleep-inducing agent.
For eg: cannabis, cocaine etc.
Psychotropic substances mean the mind aler'ng substances.
For eg: LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) etc.
Classifica(on of Narco(cs
1. Natural origin: drugs occurring in nature and obtained from plants. Eg
opium is derived from opium poppy.
2. Semi – synthe'c: when the basic structure of drugs is retained but the
func'onal group is altered. Eg apomorphine, heroin etc.
3. Synthe'c origin- man made drugs. Eg methadone, etc.
Classifica(on of psychotropic substances:
1. Depressants: compound that slows down the ac'vity of central nervous
system. Eg tranquilizers
2. S'mulants: compound that excite the Central nervous system for limited
period. Eg cocaine
3. Hallucinogen: those compound that alter how reality is perceived means
they create hallucina'ons. Eg charas, ganja etc.
Controlled Substances:
These are drugs or chemicals regulated by law due to their poten'al for abuse.
These include narco'cs, hallucinogen, s'mulants, depressants and
psychotropic substances.
Collec'on and packaging of controlled substances:
1. Scene approach and safety precau'ons: photograph and document
evidence Insite. Use of PPE kits. Avoid direct or inhala'on of any sort of
