GERIATR
ANAESTHESIA IN GERIATRICS
, INTRODUCTION
• “GERENTOLOGY” is the broadest term applied to studies of ageing
• “GERIATRICS”– medical subspeciality that focuses upon care of the
elderly patients
• The world health organisation (WHO) classifies the geriatric
Elderly or older person 65-74 year of age
Aged 75-84 year
Very Old >85year
• “ AGEING” is a progressive physiological process that is
characterised by degenerative changes in both structure and
function of organ and tissue with consequent loss of functional
reserve of various systems ,more importantly with a decrease in
ability to respond to stress and overcome complications .
,• The chronological age is not
considered a contraindication for
any surgical intervention but the
greater number of patients
presenting with age related or
coexisting diseases definitely carry
high risk of postoperative
complications
• The improvements in anesthesia
and surgical techniques have
considerably reduced surgical
mortality in general populations.
But anesthesia related mortality is
still high in older patients
