• Is the process of artificial simulation of
uterine contractions prior to the onset of
spontaneous labour
• It is an obstetric intervention that should
be used when elective birth will be
beneficial to mother and baby
• The purpose of induction is to effect the
birth of the baby, thereby ending the
pregnancy

Maternal
• Prolonged post-term pregnancy (Post
maturity)
• Hypertensive illnesses including pre-
eclampsia
• Diabetic- Diabetic woman carry an increased
risk of pregnancy loss with prenatal mortality
• Medical problems such as respiration or
cardiac diseases
• Placenta Abruption

• Unstable lie especially if placenta praevia
and pelvic abnormalities have been
excluded and lie is corrected to
longitudinal.
