, One of the reasons I feel fortunate to be beginning my
teaching career in this time period is the abundance of
technology available, especially as it relates to education. I
believe that this scenario would benefit from methodic technology
usage in the form of a parent-teacher communication app that has
multilingual capabilities. One such application I came across was
a platform run by an education nonprofit called TalkingPoints.
The platform is free for teachers and helps connect educators
with their students' families and has the added benefit of being
able to translate messages in real time. The founder of
TalkingPoints grew up as a Korean immigrant EL student. She noted
that a major difference between her mother and her friends'
families was that at the time, there were more resources and
tools available to support English speaking students. Her
experience has made her determined to ensure that all families
are empowered to be involved in their children's education,
regardless of the language they speak. (TalkingPoints : About Us,
2022) This app would help me communicate with the student’s
family in their native language, thereby building rapport and
making sure that the family is aware that I value their presence
in their child’s education.
