Discuss the way in which hormones promote body homeostasis. -
answer The use of chemical messengers regulates long term processes.
Homeostasis is often maintained through negative feedback.
Compare and contrast the endocrine system and the nervous system.
Make sure you understand the differences between a neurotransmitter
and a hormone, addressing the importance of receptor specificity. -
answer Endocrine system:
- Uses hormones
- Effects on many effector organs
- Is slower and longer lasting
Nervous system:
- Uses electricity and chemicals to send fast messages
- Has a specific effector organ.
, Neurotransmitters are released by neurons whereas hormones are
released by endocrine glands.
What is negative feedback and what is its role in regulating blood levels
of the various hormones. - answer Negative feedback is the response to
a changed body condition. A signal will tell the body to make a change if
something is too high or low from the normal level. Once the body is
back to normal the signal is turned off. One example is parathryroid
hormones regulating calcium in the blood. If calcium decreases, the
parathyroid hormone stimulates calcium release from the bones and
increases calcium uptake into the blood stream.
List and describe the four types of intercellular communication
pathways that enable the body to maintain homeostasis. - answer
Direct communication - answer - Transmits through gap junctions
- Occurs between two cells of the same type
-Cardiac muscle cells
