Emerging Technologies in Cyber Security
TASK 2
Alliah Company Network Infrastructure Vulnerabilities
(Passed First Attempt)
Western Governors University
, A: WLAN VULNERABILITIES
Alliah Company has a wireless access point that services a large outdoor patio area that is
used by employees. With wireless networks, anyone within range of the wireless signal can
capture and record network traffic. They can then attempt to use the information gained from
sniffing to do things such as MAC spoofing or stealing usernames and passwords. Typically,
network access points are within physical structures which are secured by things such as locks,
doors, gates, and even security guards. However, it is harder to secure outdoor areas to prevent
unauthorized access. This creates a larger attack surface for a potential malicious user.
The network at Alliah Company is protected by a firewall, but there is no mention of
specific security on the access point itself such as encryption or SSID passwords. If there is an
unsecured AP with a range that extends beyond the physical building, this could create potential
problems for Alliah Company by opening them up to several types of attacks including but not
limited to man-in-the-middle attacks, Denial-of-Service attacks, and spoofing attacks.
Another potential problem lies with the connection between Alliah Company
headquarters and their website servers which are in data center 100 miles away. This means that
employees will have to connect remotely to access and use data, transferring data through ISP’s
in the process. Alliah Company does not mention if a VPN is in use to encrypt data in transit.
This means that the data in transit through the network could be susceptible to a man-in-the-
middle attack, thus affecting the confidentiality of the data.
B: MOBILE VULNERABILITIES
Alliah Company has several employees that travel as part of their job function. These
employees use various mobile devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones. One major
concern for mobile devices is device theft. If a mobile device is stolen, the thief could then use
the device to access the company network as well as access any confidential information that
could be saved on the device.
Another major problem involving mobile devices is the method used to connect to the
network of Alliah Company. Often, employees who are traveling will use their mobile devices
