Leadership of Curriculum Design and Instruction
TASK 2
Curriculum Evaluation
(Passed First Attempt)
Western Governors University
, A1: Curriculum Map Alignment
The Curriculum map should include all Illinois State Standards and should be
aligned in a way to cover all standards with enough time to show proficiency. There
were some standards that were missing. The current curriculum map was missing the
standards 4.O.A.2, and 4.MBT.A.3. These standards are essential for students to be
able to show their understanding and proficiency in fourth grade as it covers
multiplication and division as well as understanding place value to round. 4.NBT.B.4 is
also not included but covers addition and subtraction of whole numbers. This is a key
skill that students will need as they progress through their school career.
A2: Curriculum Map Data
After analyzing the data and school performance, only 23% of the fourth grade
students are proficient in math standards. This is well below the state average. Specific
subgroups to consider are students who are African American or students with an IEP.
These specific groups are also scoring well below state acreage on the math standards.
When looking at the specific domains and standards, the fourth grade students
struggled in Measurement and Data as well as the standards for Number Operations in
Base Ten, and Geometry. These domains also show that the students scored lower than
the district or state averages. While looking at the Curriculum Map, it is evident that
Geometry is taught as the last unit in the school year. This means it is also covered in
the shortest amount of time and allows the least amount of time for mastery. One
possible way to improve these scores would be to include these standards in the
framework and teach them earlier in the school year.
