TASK 3
Assessment and Instruction
(Passed First Attempt)
Western Governors University

, Evaluation of the Summative Assessment

A1. Strengths and Weaknesses in Relation to Cultural Responsiveness

One strength of the summative assessment in relation to cultural responsiveness is that it

is mostly aligned with units of the curriculum and the state standards. The assessment covers

standards required for students to master skills and concepts in division. This means that the

expected or required skills were taught to the students during the school year and this will help

the students be more successful. Another strength is that the directions on the assessment are

clear and precise. This is important because the students will know what they need to do to

complete each section of the test.

One weakness of the summative assessment in relation to cultural responsiveness is that

there is no variety in the questions. The majority of the assessment is computations, which

according to Bloom’s Taxonomy, are the lowest section of knowledge because students just need

to recall or remember the answer. Assessments should aim to challenge students with higher-

order thinking and culturally responsive questions. Another weakness is that the questions

themselves are not culturally responsive. There are two questions with information that some

students may not understand or know what they are. Question 21 mentions a basketball team and

question 23 mentions bulls and heifers. If students aren’t familiar with sports or the terminology

being used, they will struggle to provide a proficient answer.

A2. Strengths and Weaknesses in Relation to Accessibility

One strength of the summative assessment in relation to accessibility is that the questions

are aligned with the curriculum map. This means that students had access to the curriculum

because the required skills and concepts were taught to them, so students were exposed to the

types of questions on the test.
