Composition: Writing with a Strategy
RGM2 TASK 1
Analysis of a Text
(Passed First Attempt)
Western Governors University
, Summary
Nancy Barile's opinion piece warns teachers about the unattainability and futility of achieving
total control and freedom through an endless drive for efficiency, which would be “the efficiency
trap” (Barile, n.d.). The article discusses teachers’ tendencies to work on their daily busy lives
and adds more tasks with an illusion of achieving total efficiency (Barile, n.d.). She provides five
ways to prevent falling into this trap, be more productive, and have a meaningful and joyful life.
The first one suggests recognizing that cramming more tasks into a day will only worsen matters
since there are so many hours. She recommends working on what is most important; in other
words, prioritizing. For the third, Barile warns about conveniences designed to save time; the
catch with these conveniences is that in saving time, which usually uses the time up with more
tasks and work, thereby getting overexerted. She then urges the reader to stop believing they are
missing out on professional development, conferences, volunteering opportunities, and others
because it is not genuinely missing out if it is not a priority or goal. Barile describes her
experience as difficult as she felt she was missing out on many activities around her that she did
not have time to participate in. The fifth way she says the reader can avoid the trap is to do what
matters to them first (Barile, n.d.).
Purpose
The purpose of Barile’s piece is to caution the reader about the “efficiency trap,” which can
induce the reader to get overworked with more tasks than required. These tasks will give an
illusion of efficiency by constantly adding more jobs with no end in sight. She also encourages
the audience to recognize the value of time and put themselves first by taking vacations and time
off instead of completing tasks (Barile, n.d.).
