Family counselors advise clients to make decisions about their future, encourage clients
to discuss their emotions and experiences, and help them process their reactions and adjust to
unexpected changes in their lives (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022). This is what makes
family counselors essential to parenting style decision-making. Parenting decisions may be the
most significant choices people make. Choosing a parenting style can guide a parent on what to
do to bring up their child. Parents’ actions and inactions affect their child’s adult life (Doepke et
al., 2019). Notwithstanding, all parenting styles come with consequences, positive or negative.
There are many parenting styles, but we will compare authoritarian and authoritative parenting.
(Doepke et al., 2019). The purpose of this report is to compare authoritarian parenting and
authoritative parenting styles. The intended audience for this report is family counselors who
need to know the difference between these parenting styles since one can have adverse, life-long
psychological effects on a child.
The first parenting style, authoritarian parenting, directly influences the child’s choice,
which lowers the child's happiness at all stages of cognitive formation and may have other
repercussions. In the authoritarian style, the parents impose their will through coercion by
restricting the choice set and leaving little leeway to the child (Doepke et al., 2019). Imposing
these drastic restrictions requires constant monitoring by the parents. Another negative point of
the authoritarian style is that the parent places the child into a particular setting, such as a career,
before they can figure out their talent (Doepke et al., 2019). These parents tend to have a one-
way mode of communication where the parent establishes strict rules, no negotiations, the rules
are not usually explained, and errors are not tolerated and usually lead to punishment
(Sanvictores & Mendez, 2022). Authoritarian parents are less nurturing than other parenting
