1. According to Meara and Patton (1994), counselor’s invitation to the client to work in
collaboration is an important factor that build client’s relationship and working alliance. I

strongly agree with the authors because in building therapeutic relationship that involves
empathy helps the counsellor to communicates understanding of the client’s problems
and fosters a sense of working together in a "we' situation. Another quality of the
counsellor that helps to form working alliance is the counselor's approach to the work. If
the counselling approach is regular and orderly, consistent and caring or non-judgmental,
the client will be motivated to partake in an alliance. Elucidating the counselor
interventions and techniques to the client make them feel involved in the decision-making
process as well as avoidance of theoretical or technical jargon. Additionally, when the
counselor create an atmosphere where the client can express themselves, it demonstrate
that the counselor is ready to help and repair any ruptured relationship that may occur
during the counselling process. The counselor's personal qualities are essential in
maintaining an effective alliance with the client. Genuineness and warmth along with
naturalness and occasional humor are great personal qualities that help the client feel
accepted and supported. Likewise, the counselor's ability to admit not understanding the
client and allow to receive feedback from the client is very vital in establishing working
alliance. The counsellor must also possess an effective communication skills with sense
of humor at all time.
Kivlighan and Schmitz, (1992) explained how important the technical activities will influence or
determine the working alliance with client which reflect technical ability of the counsellor to
they manage difficult situation as they work with the client. For example, the transferences and
countertransference that do occur during the session may affect or rupture the relationship
between the client and counsellor if the counsellor did not possess adequate counselling skills,
