Diagnostic Criteria
• According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders, Fifth Edition, (DSM-5), to meet the criteria for
diagnosis of schizophrenia, the patient must have experienced at
least 2 of the following symptoms :
• Delusions
• Hallucinations
• Disorganized speech
• Disorganized or catatonic behavior
• Negative symptoms

Comorbidities
• Rates of comorbidity with substance-related disorders
are high in schizophrenia. Over half of individuals with
schizophrenia have tobacco use disorder and smoke
cigarettes regularly.
• Comorbidity with anxiety disorders is increasingly
recognized in schizophrenia. Rates of obsessive-
compulsive disorder and panic disorder are elevated
in individuals with schizophrenia compared with the
general population.
