Chapter 3: The Little Girl – NCERT Beehive

Short & Easy Summary

This story is written by Katherine Mansfield. It is all about a little girl named Kezia and her relation
with her father. The chapter shows how fear, misunderstanding, and lack of communication can
effect our lovely relations.


Kezia is a young girl who is very afraid of her father. He is strict, busy, and does not show any interest.
His loud voice and harsh behavior make Kezia very nervous. She feels more comfortable with her
grandmother and mother.


One day, Kezia tears some important papers while trying to make a gift for her father. Her father
becomes very angry and punishes her. This increases her fear and distance from him.


Later, when Kezia’s mother is hospitalized, Kezia was alone with her father. One night, she has a
nightmare and cries in fear, as she often got bad dreams. Her father comes, comforts her, and lets her
sleep beside him. At that moment, Kezia realizes that her father loves her deeply, but does not know
how to express it.


The story ends with Kezia understanding her father’s true nature and feeling safe and loved.
