C) Krajina-Strandzhanska region: It is divided into three sub-regions: Srednogorsko-Zadbalkanska,
Kraishtsenska and Thrace-Strandzhanska
D) Rila-Rhodope region: It is divided into four subregions: Osogovo-Belasica mountain group with the
Struma River valley, Rila-Pirin mountain group with the Mesta River valley, Western Rhodope and
Eastern Rhodope regions
E) Black Sea region
2. Danube Plain
A) geographical location, borders and size
The Danube Plain is the northernmost geographical region in Bulgaria, extending between the Danube
River in the north and the Fore-Balkans in the south, reaching the Timok River in the west and the
Black Sea in the east, it occupies an area of 31,500 km2. Its length from the Timok River to the Black
Sea is 500 km, and its width - from 20-25 km (in the western part) to 120 km (Ludogorie and
Dobrudzha).
B) geological structure and paleogeographic development
The Danube Plain is developed on the Moesian Plate, which has a platform-type geological structure.
Its base is made of folded metamorphic rocks, sedimentary rocks are deposited on them, and a loess
