Introduction

• Design rules (or usability rules) are rules that a designer can follow in order to
increase the usability of the system or product e.g., principles, standards,
guidelines.

Introduction

• Design rules should start being used early in the lifecycle. For instance,
during the design
• Note that design rules can also be used to support the evaluation of the
usability of the design or system under development.

• We will:
 First take a detailed look at abstract principles for supporting usability.
 Later on, we will look at some of the most well used and well known sets
of heuristics or 'golden rules‘, which tend to provide a succinct summary
of the essential characteristics of good design (and specifically Nielsen's
heuristics, Shneiderman's golden rules and Norman's principles).
