Design Rules
Introduction
• Design rules (or usability rules) are rules that a designer can follow in order to
increase the usability of the system or product e.g., principles, standards,
guidelines.

Design Rules
Introduction
• Design rules should start being used early in the lifecycle. For instance,
during the design
• Note that design rules can also be used to support the evaluation of the
usability of the design or system under development.
• We will:
First take a detailed look at abstract principles for supporting usability.
Later on, we will look at some of the most well used and well known sets
of heuristics or 'golden rules‘, which tend to provide a succinct summary
of the essential characteristics of good design (and specifically Nielsen's
heuristics, Shneiderman's golden rules and Norman's principles).
