This document contains a complete Chemistry investigatory project for Class XI (CBSE) titled “Testing Contamination of Water by Checking Sulfide Ion Concentration.” The project studies bacterial contamination in water samples by analyzing the presence and concentration of sulfide ions (S²⁻), which are reliable indicators of anaerobic bacterial activity. Water samples from tap water, pond water, bottled water, and distilled water (control) are tested using a sulfide ion testing method, and results are compared through observation tables and analysis. The project is prepared strictly according to CBSE investigatory project guidelines (2024–25) and includes theory, methodology, observations, analysis, conclusion, precautions, and bibliography. Also available in the CBSE Class 11 Chemistry Mega Bundle at a discounted price. This PDF is suitable for: CBSE Class 11 Chemistry practical submission Investigatory project evaluation Viva voce preparation Environmental chemistry studies

, INTRODUCTION

Water is an essential resource for all living organisms, and
its quality directly impacts health and well-being.
However, water contamination is a widespread issue that
poses serious risks to both human health and the
environment. Contaminated water can harbor harmful
bacteria, leading to diseases such as cholera, dysentery,
and typhoid.
One of the indicators of bacterial contamination in water
is the presence of sulfide ions (S² ). Sulfide ions are
typically produced during the decomposition of organic
matter by anaerobic bacteria. Elevated levels of these ions
in water indicate poor water quality and bacterial activity.
This project focuses on testing water samples collected
from different sources for bacterial contamination by
measuring the concentration of sulfide ions. The results
will help determine the extent of contamination and
provide insights into the potential causes. Understanding
these factors is crucial for taking measures to ensure
water safety and prevent waterborne diseases.
This investigatory study highlights the importance of
water quality testing and aims to emphasize the need for
clean and safe water for all.

, Objective
The objective of this project is to:
•Analyze water samples collected
from various sources to check for
bacterial contamination.
•Determine the concentration of
sulfide ions in the water, which are
indicative of bacterial activity.
•Identify the potential causes of
contamination in the tested water
samples.
By achieving these objectives, the
project aims to create awareness
of water quality and the
importance of maintaining safe
drinking water standards
