Classical Conditioning:
Research methods:
Aim: To investigate the outcome of the NS and UCS when they are repeatedly
paired together.
IV: The presentation of the stimuli (NS and UCS). The food items and
bell/horn/drums.
DV: The unconditioned and conditioned response (salivation)
Hypothesis: It was hypothesised that an NS + UCS combination would lead to
classical conditioning. The bell + ham = salivation as opposed to the bell +
banana = aggression.
EVs: If your laptop was lagging and couldn’t present the UCS in time (1/2
second)
CVs:
1. Identify any concept/s highlighted by the activity and explain how they are
demonstrated in the chosen practical activity.
Before conditioning: The UCS automatically and reflexively elicits an
unconditioned response. (without any prior learning).
Before conditioning, the dog didn’t elicit a relevant response to the bell/drums/horn
(NS). The dog’s response to the piece of meat or sausage (UCS) was to salivate
(UCR).
During Conditioning: Acquisition occurs (pairing of NS with UCS, eventually the ns
becomes the CS). The NS is repeatedly paired with the UCS and then elicits a
conditioned response.
Acquisition is occurring here, that is, the NS is being associated with the UCS, until
the NS alone produces a response.
The NS becomes the CS.
During conditioning, the bell/horn/drums (CS) are repeatedly paired with the desired
food (UCS), therefore causing the dog to salivate in response to the bell/horn/drums
(CR).
After conditioning: The NS has become the CS and the UCR has becomes the
CR, in response to the CS.
After conditioning, the bell/horn/drums have become the conditioned stimulus
causing the dog to salivate (CR)
