Task 1

A1. Advantages and Disadvantages of a System
Usability is at the heart of any health information system (HIS). If the user
is unable to achieve the goals with the tools provided, the tool with not be used
and the user will have to find another way to complete the task at hand.
Interoperability is where a system and/or software is able to allow the sharing
of data between healthcare providers. This allows a continuity of care to exist for
patients. As an example, it would allow for a patient to not have to repeat a lab
draw in the hospital if it had just been done in the doctor’s office if both systems
were able to share that information with each other. The problem with this comes
due to there being more than one information platform that is used throughout the
world and they are not all compatible with each other. There are also different

formats that are used and names of specific tests that may be different in different
parts of the world.
Scalability is a term that explains the way the HMIS (health management
information system) to grow with the needs of the users of the system. One benefit
of having scalability is that users aren’t forced to learn a new system to
accomplish daily tasks when there are new components that are needed in the
existing system.
Lastly, compatibility refers to the ability of a software program to be able to
work with other software programs as well as be used on a number of different
devices. Compatibility generally refers to systems that are on the same
infrastructure/platform, but can be used independently of each other (Tan and
Payton, 2009).
A2. Patient Care and Documentation
An effective system allows patient care to be congruent through different
pieces of the healthcare process. It allows a patient’s information to be seen by
their primary care provider, applicable information to be seen for any testing
that may need to be completed (lab, x-ray, CT, MRI, etc), as well as a transfer
of care to a specialist, hospital or surgical center. This allows all members of
the healthcare team to know relevant information with a patient, especially
important if the patient is a poor historian or unable to communicate.
