o Hemoglobin (Hgb): 12-18 g/dL
o Hematocrit (Hct): 37-52%
o WBC: 5-10 mm3
o RBC: 4.2-6.1 mm3
BUN: 10-20 mg/dL
Creatinine: 0.5-1.2 mg/dL
Electrolytes
o Sodium: 135-145 mEq/L
o Potassium: 3.5-5 mEq/L
o Calcium: 9-10.5 mg/dL
o Chloride: 98-106 mEq/L
o Magnesium: 1.5-2.5 mEq/L
Thera: 3.3-6.6 mEq/L
o Phosphorus: 2-4.5 mEq/L
Medications to know:
Metronidazole
Is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections of the vagina, stomach, liver, skin, joints, brain
& spinal cord, lungs, heart, or blood stream
Warning:
o Don’t use if recently drank alcohol or have taken disulfiram within past 2 weeks.
Route: oral
Missed dose: take ASAP if it’s almost time, skip the missed dose
Storage: closed container at room temp, away from heat, moisture, and direct light to keep from
freezing
SE: N/V/D/C upset stomach
Disulfiram
It can treat problem drinking by creating an unpleased reaction to alcohol by blocking an enzyme that
is involved in metabolizing alcohol intake
Warning:
o don’t drink any alcohol while taking this medication and for up to 14 days after you stop
taking medication
Any source of alcohol while taking this med can make pt VERY sick
Avoid ALL alcohol – perfume, Colone, mouthwash, alcohol prep pads, extracts, cough/ cold/ flue meds
Prednisone

A corticosteroid medicine used to decrease inflammation and keep your immune system in check if it is
overactive
Used to treat allergic disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, crohn’s disease, arthritis, COPD
Avoid taking if you have a fungal infection that requires oral antifungals, avoid being near ppl who are sick
or have infections, don’t receive a “live” vaccine
Take with food
Wear a medical alert tag or carry and ID card stating that you are taking it
SE: hives, difficult breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
Phenazopyridine
Trade name: Pyridium
Use: relief of pain due to irrigation of low GU tract: dysuria
o Used to treat urinary symptoms such as pain or burning, increased urination, and increased
urge to urinate
SE: bright orange urine, nausea, rash, headache, vertigo
Nursing management: may cause red/orange discoloration of urine and tears, take after meals, don’t
take more than 2 days if taking antibodies for a UTI
Polystyrene sulfonate
retention enema
Therapeutic: decrease potassium levels
Memory trick:
o kayexalate – helps K+ to exit the body
Key words:
o helps the large intestine to remove excess K+ within the body
Key points:
o Access abdomen
o Recent bowel patterns & frequent of stools
o Bowl function
o Encourage pt to drunk fluids after administration
o K+ within normal level (3.5-5.0)
