● Illness and Disease
○ Illness is highly subjective. Means something is not right or something is wrong.
When personal function is diminished
○ Disease is an alteration in body functions resulting in reduced capacities or a

○ The causation of a disease or condition is called its etiology.
○ There are two ways to classify illness and disease…
○ Acute Illness
■ Symptoms of relatively short duration
■ Symptoms appear abruptly
■ Symptoms subside quickly
○ Chronic Illness (6 months or longer)
■ Symptoms last for an extended period, usually 6 months or longer and
often for the person’s life
■ Usually have a slow onset
■ Periods of remission – symptoms disappear
■ Periods of exacerbation – symptoms reappear
