How many stages are there to pregnancy?
- 4, from delivery till they are back to as good as they are going to get at 6 weeks.
What’s some important parts to the uterus and going back to prepregnancy state?
- Its most important to go back down to normal state, we want the inside to heal. It’s the only
organ that can heal without a scar.
- If it doesn’t heal right it’s called Subinvolution.
What’s the biggest problem postpartum?
- Bleeding, biggest cause of death. Can lose up to 500 ML
What things happen to the body after giving birth?
- All the hormones are gone because the placenta is gone.
- The bladder that once was a pancake now has room, it has to relearn its tone. Make sure they
void every 2 hours even if they don’t want to. This helps retrain the bladder.
- The lungs now adjust, they now have room again/
- There is huge changes with volume, circulation.
- We want people to rest, recover, psychological adjustment and try and be as normal as possible.
What is the progress of the uterus going back to its normal size?
- The fundus will go down 1-2 CM every 24 hours.
- 2 weeks after its at the synthesis roughly 12 weeks size
- After this you can no longer feel it.
After delivery how often are vitals checked?
- Every 15 minutes for the first hour
o THEN
- Every 30 minutes for the 2nd hour
- This includes all vitals *BP, pulse etc* plus fundus, bleeding etc.
- If they had a Epidural the must be able to move their legs before getting out of bed and before
they can get out of the recovery room.
For the baby to get out of recovery what are we looking for?
- Looking at HR, resp rate, color, any signs of resp distress.
- Same time fromt 15 minutes for 1st hour and 30 minutes for 2nd hour.
When checking the uterus what is always important with the bladder?
, - If you feel a water balloon at the bottom part of her stomach *the synthesis* she needs to void,
make sure she empties her bladder. If you don’t it pushes the uterus and makes it go off to the
side.

How does Oxytocin help after deliver?
- Considered the feel good hormone
- It helps with breast feeding and also makes the uterus clamp down and can also cause cramps.
o Cramps can be from breastfeeding or through IV.
o Cramps are a good sign
What is the position to check the uterus?
- Upper hand needs to be cupped to locate the fundus
- Lower hand supports uterus at pelvic bone
o If you are massaging the uterus

Explain the cervix after delivery:
- Its soft for the first 12-18 hours
- It closes over 2 weeks but is never totally the same again.
- If you see a trickle of blood = this means, there is some kind of laceration that needs to be fixed.
Lubrication after delivery is harder but it returns after ovulation
Describe and understand lochia:
- That you can have a little or a lot
- If you SOAK one of the big pads which is about 6 inches, it feels heavy they are bleeding badly
and need to be looked at.
