Microbial Growth
Microbial Growth
• Most bacteria multiply by binary fission
• Yeasts usually multiply by budding
• Moulds multiply by hyphal growth and extension
Phases of Growth
• Lag phase
• Exponential Phase
• Stationary phase
• Death Phase
Laq Phase
• Cells adjusting to new conditions
• Little or no cell division occurs
• Period of intense metabolic activity
• Enzymes and RNA being produced
• Can last from an hour to several days
Log (Exponential) Phase
• Cells dividing
• Most rapid growth period
• Number of cells produced > number of cells dying
• Period of highest metabolic activity
Stationary Phase
• Cells numbers reach equilibrium
• Number of cells produced = number of cells dying
• Caused by:
• Build-up of toxic metabolites
• Change in pH of medium (Becomes acidic)
• Lack of essential nutrients
• Insufficient oxygen supply
