Introduction
T-Mobile is a major wireless provider for the U.S. population. It currently ranks number
two in overall scale with over 100 million subscribers(behind Verizon Wireless). A few short
years ago, T-Mobile was ranked fourth in size compared to Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint (which
recently was acquired by T-Mobile). Massive changes in the company’s strategy helped the
organization gain millions of subscribers and the financial backing to eventually acquire Sprint.
Today, T-Mobile is no longer the cost leader in the industry, but delivers value to their customer
base with its simplicity and leading network. The evolution of 5G networks has catapulted T-
Mobile to a leadership position. 5G is expected to reshape technology as a whole and how we
interact with connected devices. “The fifth generation (5G) of network technology has the
potential to benefit everything from entertainment and gaming to education and public safety.
Over time, 5G is expected to deliver faster download speeds, real-time responses, and enhanced
connectivity, giving businesses and consumers the potential to experience new, innovative
technologies” (T-Mobile 2021). Most analysts predict that T-Mobile will lead in 5G coverage,
speed, and development for the foreseeable future. “Both Verizon and AT&T are forecasted to
start closing the ‘fast 5G’ gap in 18 to 36 months…at best, and that’s pretty much it. While it’s
rarely wise to make long-term predictions in such a volatile industry, analysts simply see no way
for T-Mobile’s supremacy in both 5G speeds and coverage to be challenged anytime soon.
Possibly ever” (Diaconescu, 2020). For T-Mobile to truly capitalize on their 5G leadership
position, they must establish and utilize specific IT systems that help generate useful
information. Additionally, they must do so in a manner that mitigates security risks as well as
potential social and political impacts.
