Bangladesh and India relations are historically deep due to shared culture and India's role in
Bangladesh's liberation war in 1971. The bilateral relations between the neighboring countries
People's Republic Of Bangladesh and the Republic Of India formally began in 1971 with India's
recognition of an independent Bangladesh (Which was formerly known as East Pakistan). But
India's military intervention helped Bangladesh secure independence in 1971 from West
Pakistan. Bangladesh and India are common members of Commonwealth, SAARC and
BIMSTEC. Two countries share many cultural similarities. Especially Bangladesh and East
Indian states like West Bengal, Assam, Tripura are Bengali speaking.
Although some disputes are still unresolved:
Farakka Barrage Issues:
Farakka barrage issues between India and Bangladesh are still a top dispute between both countries.
Bangladesh accuses India of diverting too much water from Ganga's river dry seasons. Causing severe
fresh water scarcity, which silently harms agriculture, fisheries and Sundarbans and ecological damage

sharing and environmental impacts, exacerbated by climate change.
Border Issues:
India Bangladesh border issues primarily involve illegal migration, smuggling and security concerns.
India's controversial shoot on sight policy Border Guard Security Force (BSF), causing civilian death and
human rights issues. Although 2015 a land boundary agreement resolved enclave disputes, a major
historical problem.
India's Shoot to Kill Policy on the Bangladesh Border:
Security officials openly admit that unarmed civilians trying to enter India illegally are being killed. Over
the past 10 years Indian security forces have killed almost 1,000 people, mostly Bangladeshis, turning
the border area into a south Asian killing field. No one has been prosecuted for any of these killings, in
spite of evidence in many cases that makes it clear the killings were in cold blood against unarmed and
defenseless local residents.
Political Tension (recent):
Bangladesh-India relation's golden chapter is over, once a "Golden Chapter," are in a severe crisis due
to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina and 5th August's political shifts, India's blind support for Awami league
and Sheikh Hasina angered ordinary people of Bangladesh. India's hosting of Hasina, and security
