A.
Ridgeland Academy is a suburban middle school with about 1,000 students. Of
those 1,000 students on the school report card, 39% identify as Black/African American,
roughly 390 students. The African American subgroup makes up the largest racial group
in the school. Therefore, the statistics are important to look at. As far as academic
performance for Black/African American students, 51% are proficient in reading, 54%
are proficient in math and a slightly larger percentage of 61% are proficient in science.
For each subject, only about half of the students are meeting proficiency levels
compared to white students who are in the 80% to 90% proficiency range for all
subjects. For discipline and attendance, for all subgroups 20% have been suspended
and 11% are chronically absent. However, for Black/African American students those
percentages are far higher at 36% suspended and 15% chronically absent. Lastly, with
lower test scores and higher percentages of behavior issues, their perceptions of school
culture are low. Less than 20% of Black/African American families feel included in the
school community and 27% feel cared about by teachers. With the highest percentage
by far, a whopping 18% report being bullied in school compared to all the other
subgroups who fall below 10%. This subgroup demonstrates that there are major
academic and social problems within Ridgeland Middle School. (WGU 2024)
