The 4 routes of medication administration - Answer-1. ingestion: oral tablets, lozenges, sublingual
tablets
2. Application: skin ointments, skin sprays, throat gargles, transdermal skin patches, eye, nose or ear
drops
3.inhalation: respiratory= inhaling medications
4. insertion: rectal or vaginal suppositories
How to prepare medications - Answer-1. Gather the client's meds from storage and ensure they have
not expired
2. gather the client's MAR and the copy of the physician's order
3. cross-check the label on the medication order with the MAR and the physician order three times.
Once when med is taken off shelf, once when med is being poured and once when med is being put back
in storage
4. gather equipment needed:
oral meds tablets.: gloves, pill cutter, tweezers, med cup
, oral meds liquids: gloves, medicine cup, and glass measuring cup
ear drops: gloves, cotton balls/ tissues
suppositories: gloves, medicine cup, lubricant: K-Y jelly
transdermal skin patch: gloves, soap and paper towels
5. Take medications to client and ensure a private and clean area
6. identify the client by viewing photograph and asking client what there full name is
7. explain the procedure and obtain consent from client
8. wash hands and put on gloves
9. begin
ingesting oral tablets - Answer-1. pour medication with tweezers/lid in med cup
2. make sure patient is sitting up, doing meds one at a time, drinking water with it, taking time between
pills.
3. remain with patient until the meds are swallowed
4. lozenges dissolve in mouth and are taken last
ingesting sublingual tablets - Answer-1. instruct client to place under the tongue in front part of mouth
2. do not swallow until tablet is completely dissolved
3. Nitroglycerin SL tablets:
-clients must sit down upon first indication of chest pain, administer nitro SL and notify supervisor,
document and see if order for aspirin
4. after one dose of nitro SL and no relief call 911 and if there is relief advise client to sit for 15-20
minutes to prevent dizziness
5. tightly cap nitro SL bottle
ingestion of liquids - Answer-1. check to see that the cap of the bottle is secured and read if it is a
suspension and needs to be shaken
