Indian society is one of the oldest and most diverse societies in the world. It is characterized by diversity in religion, language, culture, and traditions, yet it maintains unity through shared values, the Constitution, and a common national identity. This idea of "unity in diversity "is a defining feature of Indian society. Traditionally, the social structure was based on the caste system, which led to social inequality and discrimination. To address this, the Indian Constitution abolished untouchability and introduced measures to ensure social justice and equality. Along with caste, economic class has become an important factor in modern Indian society. The family system plays a central role, with the joint family system gradually giving way to nuclear families due to urbanization and modernization. Marriage remains an important social institution, though changing social values have led to increased acceptance of love and inter-caste marriages. Influenced by education, globalization, and technology, Indian society continues to evolve while preserving its cultural roots.

Patriarchy is associated with a set of ideas, a patriarchai jdeology that acts to explain and
justify this dominance and attributes it to inherent natural differences between men and
women. The sociologist Sylvia Walbydefines patriarchy as "a system of social suctures
and practices in which men dominate, oppress, and exploit women ". Based on the nature of
patriarchy, there are three types of patriarchy existed in India. They are:
