Evaluation – Recording prep Erin Smith 304 Composing music.

Composition one clearly convinced the chosen style of punk while composition two clearly showed
pop. Which I needed to do in order to meet the criteria. Composition one had more musical clarity
to it then number two in my first I included vocals to enhance the punk message and genre. I used
guitar, bass, drums and vocals the classic punk band instrumentation. I used these because it is what
I wanted for the song as the instrumentation alone was not enough and I felt the song needed the
angry lyrics to go with it. Composition two did not have vocals however, I wish that it did as it would
make the song sound calmer and send a bigger message to the listener. For this song, I used mainly
loops from garage band as that is all I had available at the time, however, the song came out really
well in my opinion, it would just be much better with some lyrics, but pop song lyrics are not my
strong point.

In my write-ups about each song I only really talked about what instrumentation I used, and if I were
to repeat this assignment I would write more about how I came up with the ideas to write and
create these songs and I would like to add dates to the write-ups as I feel it would increase my grade
and I would be better at talking about my creative ability. I would have a much better structural
arrangement instead of just writing about the verse-chorus and pre-chorus, I would write about why
I wanted the song to have the structural arrangement in a lot more detail.

For my first composition, I would add more harmonies and maybe a rhythm guitar just to add to the
song, I think the harmonies would create a better punk song as the harmony could be a very very
deep voice to a higher-pitched voiced to create what I believe a more punk sound. And I would like
to record the vocals into an actual interface and not just into my laptop microphone.

For my second composition, I would like to use real instruments to make it sound authentic as I
much prefer instruments then loops you can find on logic and garage band. I would love to add lyrics
to my composition as well as harmonies again and really try to create the ‘summer road trip’ feeling
as that is the name of the song.
