Reproduction is the biological process by which living organisms produce new individuals of their own kind. It
helps in:
Continuation of species
Increase in population
Passing of traits from parents to offspring
There are two main types of reproduction:
1. Asexual Reproduction
In this type, only one parent is involved and no fusion of gametes occurs. The offspring are genetically identical
to the parent (called clones).
Methods of Asexual Reproduction:
1. Fission
o One organism divides into two or more.
o Binary fission: Amoeba → splits into two
o Multiple fission: Plasmodium → splits into many
2. Budding
o A small bud grows on the parent and separates.
o Example: Yeast, Hydra
3. Fragmentation
o Body breaks into pieces; each piece grows into a new organism.
o Example: Spirogyra (algae)
4. Spore Formation
o Spores are formed in sporangia and spread by air.
o Example: Fungi, Ferns
5. Vegetative Propagation (in plants)
o New plants grow from roots, stems, or leaves.
o Examples:
Potato (stem)
Bryophyllum (leaf)
Sugarcane (stem)
Advantages:
Fast process
No partner needed
Large number produced
Disadvantages:
No variation
Less adaptability to changes
