Comprehensive Biology Review
What is Taxonomy?
The science of naming things/organisms.
What are the 3 domains?
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
Why do we use the scientific method?
To make sure that our results/experiments are valid.
What are the steps of the scientific method?
1. Observation
2.Hypothesis
3.Design Experiment.
4.Collect Data
5.Analyze
6.Conclusion
What is negative feedback?
Normal responses. Example would be a thermostat (supply and demand)
What is positive feedback?
Less common. Example would be childbirth or blood clots. (builds until you have a final result)
What are the levels of protein structure?
1.Primary Structure: Lineup of amino acids
2.Secondary Structure: Hydrogen bonds start to from alpha healaces and beta pleated sheets.
3.Tertiary Structure: Forms the final 3D shape (most finish here) {Shape determines function}
4.Quatinery Structure: Tertiary proteins join together to make a team.
What is the function of cholesterol in the cell membrane?
It reduces the fluidity in the cell membrane.
What biological molecules are polar?
, Carbs, Proteins, nucleic acids.
What biological molecule is non polar?
Lipids
What are the monomers for the biological monomers?
Proteins: amino acids
Carbs: monosaccharides
Nucleic acids: Nucleotides
Lipids: Fatty acids
How are saturated fats bonded?
All single bonded (solid at room temp)
How are unsaturated fats bonded?
At least one double bond. Causes a kink in the tail. (liquid at room temp)
What are the functions of lipids?
long term energy storage, insulation, cushioning, etc.
What are the functions of proteins?
Building blocks, needed for growth.
What are nucleic acids?
Energy transport molecules, hereditary molecules.
What causes denaturation of proteins?
1. Wrong pH
2. High temperature
3. Wrong salinity (salt levels)
What are emergent properties?
Sum is greater than the individual parts
What is an ionic bond?
2 oppositely charged ions connect because they are opposite.
What is a covalent bond?
Shares electrons.
