Research Proposal
Investigating the psychological impact that the epidemic of covid-19 has had on male
undergraduate students at Birmingham City University
INTRODUCTION
Mental health is defined as your psychological condition. A healthy form
of mental health defines as of being sound mentally and emotionally and
thus is characterized by the absence of mental illness and is reflected in
feeling comfortable about oneself. When the mental health of an
individual declines due to a stressful environment, isolation, trauma etc.
This can cause detrimental effects such as feeling unworthy, feeling
negative emotions towards themselves and others and can often lead to
depression, self-harm, and suicide. (Mental health first aid England manual, 2012)
Many factors directly and indirectly affect mental health. There is a very
strong link between mental health and physical health. ( Ohrnberger J et al,
2017). During the pandemic of covid-19, the physical health of many individuals
deteriorated due to long periods of strict isolation. Gyms and other
establishments that promote physical health were closed. Physical activity is the
largest contributor to the indirect effects which is stated in the study conducted
by Ohrnberger J et al in 2017. Inevitably, deteriorating physical health will
negatively affect the mental health of male adolescents.
Mental health concerns of people impacted by the coronavirus pandemic
have not been adequately addressed. (Lee SA, 2020). During the
pandemic, male suicide rates increased to the highest it has been in 20
years. A study was conducted by Chang J et al in Feb 2020 and the results
stated that depressive emotions were detected in 21.16% of the students,
and the incidences of mild, moderate, and moderate-to-severe depression
were 16.98%. (Chang J, 2020)
Mental health issues are common amongst students due to the pressures that a
student must entail. Mental health problems are common in students, and clearly
associated with lower academic functioning. ( Bruffaerts R et al, 2017). A study
conducted by Bruffaerts R et al which was conducted in 2018 states that
approximately one in three freshmen have reported mental health problems in
the past year.
Hypothesis
The mental health of male undergraduate students has deteriorated since the
pandemic of covid-19 began.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Aim:
, ID Number: 19113316
This research will investigate the psychological impact that the pandemic has had
amongst male undergraduate students studying currently at Birmingham city
university.
Objectives:
To recruit participants via email to take part in my online questionnaire and
submit their answers.
To determine how the mental health of male undergraduate students has
been affected the pandemic of covid-19.
To compare the difference in mental health of male undergraduate students
from the start of the pandemic to the end of the pandemic.
To evaluate the emotions caused within male undergraduate students by the
pandemic.
To understand how well male undergraduate students feel they have been
supported during the pandemic of covid-19.
METHODS
Experimental Design
Research design
This research focuses upon the mental health of male undergraduate students. This
research can only be successful due to the participants being open and honest to get
a good understanding of their mental wellbeing. Due to this, I will be conducting
research based upon an approach where my participant feels secure and
comfortable. Therefore, I have chosen to conduct this research using an anonymous
questionnaire that is designed to disclose their cognitive behaviour.
Participants
My sample will be taken from male undergraduate students studying within the life
sciences campus of Birmingham city university. This was the most convenient place
to gather a sample due to their being accessible students here that can provide
ethical approval. All data collection will be on campus and will only be from
Birmingham city university students.
The participation sample will be selected through this criterion:
Inclusion
1. Male students who isolated throughout the pandemic.
2. Male students who were key workers during the pandemic.
Exclusion
1. Male students who are not comfortable speaking upon their experiences or
feelings during the pandemic.
2. Female students(due to this research being aimed at males).
