A. Write an executive summary of the approved capstone project
Overview:
Improving operational efficiency by streamlining processes within a Primary care clinic to
reduce costs, eliminate waste, and improve overall operational efficiency

Background information/ Problem:
The primary care clinic is facing increased costs due to non-productive time, unnecessary
medical waste, and poor operational efficiency. A larger corporation recently acquired the clinic
and will need to transition to the new company’s policies and procedures. Currently, the staff
have not been using their time productively and have a vast amount of downtime. The staff do
not maintain a proper inventory of medical supplies nor establish guidelines, which increases
their medical waste. This problem has impacted patient flow through the clinic, leading to tasks
being overlooked and resulting in poor patient outcomes and increased labor costs. This project
is the result of poor prior management, a lack of a functional EMR system, and a lack of
operational policies and procedures.

The Proposed Solution:
The organization is planning on solving the problem by implementing its current EMR system,
EPIC, in the daily workflow. The EMR will facilitate reporting of the current census, identifying
outliers, and managing front-of-house inventory. We will review the current clinical workflow
and implement the new company’s policies and procedures. The management will implement a
timekeeping system that requires physical punches for clock-in and clock-out accountability. The
new timekeeping system will enable management to more effectively track situations in the
clinic. Delivering quality care to the patients will increase operational efficiency and start
generating positive revenue in the organization.

Feasibility:
The above executive summary proposal should be a realistic approach. The new company has a
positive reputation in the community and is a trusted medical partner with local hospital systems.
The long-term viability of this proposed improvement plan is going to yield positive results.

B. Explain the healthcare administration opportunity or area of need:

efficiency. By having operational efficiency, the company will save money, improve patient
outcomes, and increase productivity. The company was operating below its optimal performance
level before the sale. The staff did not maintain an inventory of medical supplies, which resulted
in expired or insufficient supplies when needed. The expired medications led to under- and over-
ordering of medical supplies. They did not prepare charts for time management, which did not
