Zara International Case Study
Question No.1
In what ways are the elements of the classical management approaches evident at Zara
International?
The first principle of Fredrick W. Taylor which is the motion study is the technique
recommended by keeping in view the physical movements and the scientific principles relating
to motion. The motion study means reducing or dividing the jobs into their basic motions. There
is clear evidence in the case that the Zara International uses the motion study approach in its
management process.
The Inditex Group which is the parent company of the Zara International, has divided the
work and shorten the time from order to arrival by a complex system which is called Just-in-time
inventory and production reporting which is responsible for keeping Zara International always in
front of the competition (Giddens, Anthony 1981). It is possible only for well trained set of
employees with the abilities of the jobs. This results in the receiving of the items at the Zara
distribution centers in the European stores within the 24 hours of receiving an order and in Asian
and American Stores with the 48 hours of receiving order (Giddens, Anthony 1981). This reveals
that there are the elements of guiding principles tow and three of the scientific management
approach in the Zara Internationals. Meantime there are also some signs of careful planning
which is smoothing the way of performing their jobs as they have to perform their jobs in a
consistent manner.
