Chapter 1 - Cell & Microscopes
1.1 Microscope
Types of Microscope:
● Light Microscope
Uses visible light and multiple lenses to observe structures.
● Transmission Electron Microscope
Uses a beam of electrons that passes through the structure to give a more detailed
image.
● Surface Electron Microscope
Uses a beam of electrons to only scan the surface of the structure. Therefore, it only
gives the image of the surface of the specimen.
Parts of Light Microscope (The Main Ones):
Eye Piece The part where the user looks through.
(Ocular Lens) Contains the first set of lenses (Ocular Lens).
Nose Piece The part used to switch between the different objective lenses.
Objective The lens closest to the specimen being viewed (The second set of lenses).
Lens
Arm Connects the head of the microscope to the base.
One of the main spots to hold when carrying a microscope.
Stage The part where the specimen is placed.
Stage Clip The part which holds the specimen in place.
, Coarse Used for quickly bringing the specimen to the focus.
Adjustment
Knob
Fine Typically used after the Coarse Adjustment Knob. Used for finer adjustments
Adjustment to the focus.
Knob
Diaphragm Controls the amount of light entering the specimen,
Light Source Gives out the light
(Mirror/Bulb)
Base Bottom part of the microscope which gives stability and support.
