INSTANT PDF DOWNLOAD This GEOG 1113L Lab 5 Assignment Guide supports students in Essentials of Geography at Georgia State University (GSU). Lab 5 focuses on Weathering, a fundamental Earth surface process responsible for breaking down rock and shaping landscapes. This lab emphasizes how physical, chemical, and biological processes alter Earth materials and influence soil formation, sediment production, and landform development. Key topics commonly covered in Lab 5 include: Mechanical (Physical) Weathering Frost wedging (freeze–thaw cycles) Thermal expansion and contraction Salt crystal growth Pressure release and exfoliation Abrasion and rock fragmentation Chemical Weathering Hydrolysis and mineral alteration Oxidation (iron-bearing minerals) Dissolution of soluble minerals Carbonation and limestone weathering Acid rain effects Biological Weathering Root wedging Lichen and microbial activity Organic acids Controls on Weathering Climate (temperature & moisture) Rock type and mineral composition Surface area and fractures Time of exposure Weathering Outcomes Soil formation and regolith Saprolite development Karst landscapes and sinkholes Spheroidal weathering Sediment supply to erosion systems This guide helps students connect weathering processes → environmental conditions → resulting landforms, a core concept in physical geography and Earth science labs. Clear, structured, and aligned with course objectives, this resource supports efficient completion of the GEOG 1113L Lab 5 Assignment. Lab 5: Weathering
GEOG 1113L – Introduction to Landforms Lab
Name: _____________

I. What is Weathering?

1. What does weathering create/provide and what would Earth’s surface be composed of if
weathering did not happen?
It creates the inorganic material in the soil, which vegetation needs to grow. The Earth's surface
have been composed of solid bedrock.
2. What is the difference between weathering and erosion?
Weathering preps the material to be ready to move and erosion is the actual movement of the
material.
3. Describe the process of frost wedging (frost action).
Water gets absorbed into the pores of a rock and then water freezes the rock expands and the
stress builds up causes the rock to break.
4. Similar to frost wedging, _salt crystal growth________ fractures rocks through crystal growth
within the pores of the rock. These crystals originate from minerals dissolved in water_______
inside the rock that later evaporates and leaves behind _mineral grains______.

5. The two previously mentioned types of weathering are both forms of what?
Granular disintegration
6. Which type of weathering causes metal to rust?
oxidation
7. Weathering that alters minerals in a rock via water, oxygen, carbon, and/or other organic acids is
called what?
Chemical weathering
8. Which type of weathering causes karst topography?
Carbonation
9. Name three features you might find in a karst landscape.
Sink holes, caves, dry valleys
10. What is one fact (from the video) about caves that you find interesting?
Caves have an ecosystem
11. Tree roots, lichen, and humans all play a part in weathering as well. Which type of weathering is
this called? Biological weathering
