I. How the Coast Works
1. What area is considered the shore? The shore is the area between high and low tide. The area
where the land meets the ocean.
2. Describe the type of area that is required for a beach to form. For a beach to form, there needs
to be a sheltered environment, like a bay. A bay forms when rock (relatively soft) is eroded.
There are pieces of land sticking out called the headlands, which are made up of harder rocks.
Another area is the swash, which is the incoming wave of water, is stronger than the backwash
which is the retrieving water.
3. Beaches require constructive waves, which are defined as what? The swash is stronger.
4. What is longshore drift? Longshore drift is the movement of sediments along a coast by waves
that approach at an angle to the shore but then the swash recedes directly away from it.
5. What is the difference between attrition and abrasion? Attrition is when rocks strike each other
while Abrasion is when rocks rub together.
6. What artificial barrier do humans use to protect the coast from high tide? Rocks are placed
above the high tide limit. These rocks are not natural, they are called a riprap.
7. What barrier is used to protect against longshore drift? Groynes are installed to trap the
sediment from moving along the beach.
