, Introduction
Digestion is the process by which food is broken down into
smaller substances that the body can absorb. This happens
through mechanical actions (chewing) and chemical actions
(enzymes and acids). The nutrients released from food are then
used for energy, growth, and repair of the body.
The digestive system is important because it allows the
body to get nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and water from food.
Without digestion, the body would not have the energy or
materials it needs to function properly, stay healthy, and
survive.
