In nursing, the interplay between social and emotional intelligence is crucial not only for
personal development but also for fostering a positive work environment. Advanced professional
nurses often face complex and challenging situations that require a robust set of skills to manage
effectively. This paper will explore how nurses can leverage key power skills, such as self-
awareness, self-management, interpersonal communication, executive function, and social
awareness, to navigate difficult workplace situations and foster joy in the workplace.
Using Each SEI Power Skill to Manage Difficult Workplace
Situations
Self-awareness
Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence, encompassing the ability to
recognize one’s emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and values. According to Goleman (1995),
self-awareness enables individuals to understand how their feelings shape their thoughts and
behaviors. For advanced professional nurses, this skill is essential for managing stress and
responding appropriately to challenging situations. By recognizing their emotional triggers,
nurses can take proactive steps to mitigate negative feelings, thereby enhancing their ability to
provide compassionate care. For example, a nurse who recognizes that they become anxious in
high-pressure situations can develop strategies to remain calm, such as deep breathing or seeking
support from colleagues.
