Dumping Syndrome: rapid emptying of the gastric contents into the small intestine that occurs
following gastric resection; large bolus of hypertonic fluid enters the intestine after a large part
of the stomach and pyloric sphincter is removed
Assessment:
• Occurs 15-30 mins after eating
• generalized weakness, sweating, palpitations, dizziness, abdominal cramps, borborygmi
(abd sounds by hyperactive intestinal peristalsis), urge to defecate, sense of fullness,
tachycardia, diarrhea
Risk Factors: stomach surgery
Planning: slowing the rapid passage of food into the intestine
Interventions:
• Eat high protein and complex carb diet (oatmeal, whole grains) w/ increase fiber as
tolerated
• Avoid caffeine containing products
• Limit high sugar foods
• Eat small meals 5-6/day
• Avoid consuming fluids with meals; drink most daily fluids between meals
• Eliminate dairy products if they are causing problem; lactose may worsen symptoms
• Line down for 20-30 minutes after meals to prevent rapid gastric emptying
• Take vitamin B12 injection as prescribed
• Take antispasmodic medication as prescribed to delay gastric emptying
