Four Days in September 1997
The film “Four Days in September,” produced in 1997, depicts the 1969 kidnapping of
the US Ambassador to Brazil, Charles Burke Elbrick. The dramatized version of the events
shows how the MR-8 and ALN guerilla groups conducted the abduction of the Ambassador to
use him in the negotiations for the release of political prisoners and protest the authoritative
military government. The film is loosely based on the memoir written by Fernando Gabeira, who
was involved in the 1969 kidnapping. The main message of the movie is humanity since the
kidnappers did not kill the Ambassador, and it shows the kind of friendship that develops
between the Ambassador and the leader of the guerilla movement. The film shows that the
Ambassador is a good person who shares some of the frustrations of the kidnappers regarding the
Brazilian military dictatorship and the need to challenge it.
The film was well dramatized and depicted the human side of people and the core of our
very existence. I learned about the gruesome nature of the Brazilian military dictatorship, which
killed innocent people who opposed them. The film shows the emotional and heart-striking
moments of humanity between the kidnappers and the ambassadors, who form a kind of
relationship and agreement on the frustrations caused by the military government. The movie is a
must-watch since it contains educational subjects that apply in the real world and the
philosophical question of morality and humanity to others.
