Career Plan: Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)
My desired career job is to become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). I am
passionate about psychology since it allows me to learn how the human mind works and
understand behavior patterns and mental health issues. To become a certified RBT, I need to
complete my degree in clinical psychology at FIU and enroll for a master's degree in two years to
have the necessary certifications to join the RBT profession. RBT job involves working under a
certified BCBA and mostly implementing behavioral treatment and instructional plans.
Current Job Salary Discussion
The average yearly salary for a registered behavior technician is $ 25,500 in Miami,
Florida, and surrounding states such as Texas and New Mexico. Based on data collected from
Turbo Tax users, RBT job salary ranges between $16,000 to $42,000 per year depending on the
skills level, years of experience, education, employer, and location. The salary prices differ by
region and state, where big cities such as New York and California have higher salary averages
of above $50,000.
Graduate School or Marketability
To be a certified Registered Behavior Technician, I need to complete the 40-hour training
component, which is one of the requirements of the Behavior Analysts Certification Board
(BACB). I will enroll in a graduate program in the Applied Behavior Analysis program at FIU
since it has an affordable tuition rate of $12,508 per year for 21 credits. The certification
program requires coursework, supervised fieldwork, and examination in accordance with BACB
guidelines. I plan to stay at FIU since it has a quality education system and a strong connection
with the community, which allows for face-to-face experience in helping people with behavioral
issues and assisting them with behavioral interventions and living skills.

Parallel Plan
If by any chance I do not accomplish my Registered Behavior Technician job, an
alternative career that I will pursue is to become a Behavioral Analyst (BCBA). The BCBA job
involves working with children on the autism spectrum and helping them with communication
learning and behavior management. This job is more advanced compared to RBT, and it will
require completing 15000 supervised training and face-to-face psychotherapy with patients. To
accomplish this career job, I would need to get a graduate degree in an ABA program at FIU or
similar universities around Miami with an average tuition fee of $ 45,040 per year. The BCBA
certification requirements include supervised independent fieldwork of 1500 hours, 1000
practicum hours, and 750 hours intensive practicum.
