Personal Statement
As a daughter of emigrant dentists from Mexico, my aspirations and career path are to
become a professional dentist like my parents and make them proud. From a young age, my
parents instilled in me the importance of hard work and determination despite the odds being
against me. Since English is my second language, I struggled from an early age to adapt since I
arrived speaking little English, and I had to learn and catch up despite being older than my
classmates. I was attracted to STEM fields from an early age since my parents instilled in me the
importance of science and being a dentist, which can help change the community and empower
others. My passion for dentistry developed from watching my parents transform people’s lives
by fixing their teeth, which boosted their confidence and helped people have a positive outlook
on their lives.
My frequent visits to my parents’ orthodontist clinic created memories and aspirations to
be a dentist in the future, and I learned the various tools and instruments used in the clinic,
including x-rays, braces, and the human nature attached to the profession. With the help of my
parents and tutors, I concentrated on sciences, mainly biology and chemistry, and learned the
fundamentals that created more passion for dentistry. In high school, I loved participating in
science projects and volunteered at my parents’ orthodontist clinic to learn the various treatments
of teeth and the human nature of compassion and service needed in the profession. I joined
Florida International University (FIU) with the aim of pursuing my dream of becoming a dentist
and working hard to achieve my goals.
I have received great mentorship from my parents and dentists close to my parents, who
have motivated me to pursue my dream and overcome the challenges associated with science and
dentistry. I have gained experience through volunteer and community work in orthodontist
